Traffic from AI Assistants Grew by 71% in One Quarter. Is Your Website Benefiting Too?

The way we search for information online is changing right before our eyes. Instead of typing queries into Google, customers are increasingly asking for recommendations directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. At Neadoo Digital, we checked what this means in practice for websites.

In May 2026, Google officially introduced a new default channel group in Google Analytics 4: AI Assistant. For the first time in the history of digital marketing, we can precisely measure how many users arrive at a website directly from answers generated by artificial intelligence.

As an agency managing SEO projects and AI SEO (GEO / AEO) campaigns, we work with live GA4 data on a daily basis. We decided to verify this trend across the websites of our active clients.

The study results for the full third quarter of 2026 leave no doubt: traffic from AI assistants is growing at a breakneck pace.

Key takeaways from the Neadoo Digital study in a nutshell:

  • Monthly traffic from AI increased by 71%. This jump in the number of sessions was recorded between July and September 2026.
  • The greatest acceleration occurred in August. In the middle of the quarter, traffic spiked by as much as +48.9% month-over-month.
  • AI already delivers an average of 3.7% in additional organic traffic. For every 100 visits from classic Google, there are nearly 4 additional visits from AI chats.
  • Leaders capture up to 7.6% of traffic from AI. For the best-optimized websites, this share is more than double the average.
  • As many as 35.0% of AI visits end in a conversion. Users coming from artificial intelligence recommendations are ready to make a purchase or reach out.

New channel in GA4: Google has been officially measuring AI traffic since May 2026

Until recently, website owners had to manually filter referral sources to check whether anyone was visiting their site from ChatGPT or Perplexity.

The situation changed in May 2026. Google updated the channel definitions in Google Analytics 4 by adding a dedicated AI Assistant channel. This represents official recognition of artificial intelligence assistants as an independent pillar of web traffic - alongside Organic Search, Social, and Paid Ads.

At Neadoo Digital, we began analyzing this data from the very first day of its rollout. The third quarter of 2026 delivered hard proof that this channel is no longer just a niche novelty.

A 71% jump in three months. How did AI traffic grow?

The monthly number of sessions generated by artificial intelligence across our portfolio increased between July and September by exactly 71%.

This was neither an accident nor a one-time spike. Traffic grew systematically month over month:

  • July: The baseline month, during which AI traffic remained at a stable level. It accounted for 23.8% of the quarterly pool of sessions.
  • August: The real breakthrough. AI traffic surged by +48.9% compared to July, generating 35.5% of the quarter's sessions.
  • September: Maintaining momentum with further growth of an additional +14.8% MoM. In total, September brought in as much as 40.7% of all quarterly AI traffic.

What drove this acceleration?

We see two main reasons:

  1. Internet users have changed their habits. When looking for specialized services, comparing offers, or seeking product reviews, people increasingly turn to ChatGPT Search or Perplexity instead of digging through dozens of links on Google.
  2. The effect of AI optimization rollouts (GEO / AEO). Large language models do not invent sources - they cite websites that are technically and substantively prepared to be read by AI bots. Websites where we implemented proper data structures and answer formats began appearing in chat citations en masse.

AI relative to classic SEO: from 0.7% to as much as 7.6% of organic traffic

The most insightful comparison is pitting AI traffic against classic search engine optimization (Organic Search).

On average across the entire analyzed portfolio, AI sessions accounted for 3.7% of organic traffic volume. In other words, for every 100 free visits from Google, there were nearly 4 additional visits originating from AI recommendations.

However, the average does not show the full picture. Three distinct groups of websites emerged within our portfolio:

Website AI Readiness Level Ratio of AI Traffic to Organic Search Group Share in Our Portfolio
Leaders (Top Tier) 4.7% to 7.6% 35% of websites
Middle group (Mid Tier) 1.9% to 2.9% 25% of websites
Baseline group (Early Stage) 0.7% to 1.6% 40% of websites

Chart 3 (02/ AI vs. Organic Search): Comparison of AI visibility ranges in the Neadoo Digital portfolio in Q3 2026 (from 0.7% in the baseline group to 7.6% among leaders).

In every third analyzed website (35%), traffic from AI assistants already generates the equivalent of nearly 5% to almost 8% of Google traffic.

This is a key takeaway for any business: the difference in customer acquisition from AI is more than tenfold (0.7% vs. 7.6%). And it does not depend on how large the company is, but on whether its website knows how to speak to language models.

35% of AI sessions end in a conversion. Why is this traffic so valuable?

Traffic from AI chats is not made up of random clicks. In the analyzed quarter, exactly 35.0% of sessions from this channel ended in a conversion in GA4 - submitting a form, making a phone call, or completing a purchase.

Why is this rate so high?

  • The AI user is pre-filtered. Before clicking a link leading to your website, they asked the model several questions, refined their budget, and specified their requirements.
  • The power of recommendation works. A link in ChatGPT or Perplexity does not look like an ad. The user clicks it feeling they have received independent, expert advice from the assistant.
  • The customer journey is shorter. Instead of browsing 5 different websites and reading guides, the client lands on your page right at the decision-making stage.

What does this mean for your business?

AI traffic does not replace traditional SEO - it builds upon it. For ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend your business, your website still needs to be visible and well-indexed.

However, being present on Google is no longer enough on its own. If competitors implement generative engine optimization (GEO / AEO) faster than you, their offer will be the one recommended to users asking questions in AI.
