Google AI Overview - What It Is and How It Revolutionizes SEO

Since March 26, 2025, Google search results in Poland have looked different: at the very top of the page, before the user sees any link, an AI-generated answer summary is displayed. This is Google AI Overview, a feature powered by Gemini models and the official evolution of the Search Generative Experience (Google SGE) project tested since May 2023. In a study by Botify and DemandSphere from December 2024, the AI summary together with the featured snippet occupied up to 67.1% of the screen on desktop and 75.7% on mobile. That figure is now over a year and a half old, and the average length of AI responses has increased since then, so treat it as a lower bound.
For website owners and SEO specialists, the arithmetic of traffic has shifted: ranking position still determines whether Google considers your page as a source at all, but it no longer decides the click. In this article, we explain how Google constructs these answers, what changed in visibility data after the launch of the Generative AI report in Search Console in June 2026, how to bypass AI Overview in search results, and what risks artificial intelligence brings to the search engine.
What Google AI Overview is and how the new artificial intelligence in search works
Google AI Overview is an AI-generated synthetic summary displayed at the top of search results, along with links to sources. The mechanism relies on Gemini models combined with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture: the model supplements the knowledge retained during training with data retrieved in real time from the live search index. In its documentation for webmasters, Google also describes the query fan-out mechanism: the system breaks down a single query into multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, assembling the final answer only from their combined results. Google also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so the set of links in both places can differ.
The AI summary does not appear for every query. Google claims it displays it only when it determines that it adds value beyond classic results, and that for many queries it does not trigger at all. In practice, this applies most often to detailed and open-ended queries, less frequently to simple transactional or navigational queries. The feature supports text, voice, and image queries, including integration with Circle to Search, which lets users ask about a highlighted portion of the screen.

Evolution from the Google SGE project to AI Overview
The foundation of AI Overview was the experimental Search Generative Experience project, unveiled in May 2023 within Search Labs. It required manual opt-in and served Google to collect data on interactions with the generated summary, used for further model development. During Google I/O in May 2024, a rebranding took place: SGE transformed into AI Overviews, available by default in the US without enrolling in a beta program.
From there, reach expanded in stages. By August 2024, the feature covered the UK, India, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico, among others; in October 2024, it surpassed one hundred countries; and on March 26, 2025, it entered nine European countries and regions: Poland, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, and Switzerland, along with local language support. Since May 2025, AI Overviews have been operational in over 200 countries and territories and support over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and Urdu.
A distinct date for the Polish market is October 8, 2025, when Google launched AI Mode in Poland as part of a rollout spanning over 40 countries. It became widely available in the days that followed that month. Since May 19, 2026, AI Mode has been running globally on the Gemini 3.5 Flash model.
Differences between AI Overviews and traditional Featured Snippets
A Featured Snippet quotes. An AI Overview paraphrases. A featured snippet is static and originates from a single page: Google selects the piece of content that best answers the query and displays it in unmodified form with a link to the source. An AI Overview synthesizes information from various websites into new content, generated dynamically for each query. One website provides a piece of data, another industry context, a third a statistic, and everything is merged into a single answer.
A different optimization goal stems from this architecture. Instead of fighting for a single position for a single URL, you fight for inclusion in the set of sources the model deems authoritative for a given intent. These two goals largely overlap, as three-quarters of the links in AI Overviews originate from pages in the top twelve organic results (Botify and DemandSphere, December 2024).
How to turn off AI Overview - the Web filter as the only solution
Google does not provide a toggle to disable generative AI summaries, neither in account settings nor as a global option. The company's stance is consistent: AI Overviews are part of core search, and core features cannot be turned off.
The official workaround, which Google itself points to in its help center, is the "Web" filter in the horizontal menu above the results, sometimes hidden under the "More" tab. Selecting it displays exclusively a classic list of text links, free of the AI summary and related SERP elements. The filter has been active since May 2024 and technically acts as a URL parameter: &udm=14. This is an important practical distinction, because clicking the tab must be repeated for every query, whereas setting https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14 as the default search engine in your browser provides a permanent effect. Browser extensions that block the AI box also exist, but they rely on the HTML structure of the results page and break after every major update on Google's side.
Site owners have had another tool since 2026, serving a different purpose. Google is testing a toggle in the Settings section of Search Console that controls whether a site's content can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover. It was launched on June 3, 2026, for select site owners in the UK at the request of the UK regulator CMA, taking effect on June 17. Google announced a global expansion without providing a date. Opting out is not a ranking signal for classic results, but it also cuts off impressions and traffic from generative features. We advise against using it outside narrow cases of publishers whose business model depends on paywalled content.
Impact of AI Overview on SEO, CTR, and the zero-click search phenomenon
All independent studies measuring CTR in the presence of an AI Overview show a decline, but their range is broad and stems from methodology:
- Pew Research Center (July 2025) analyzed 68,879 real queries from 900 Americans: with an AI summary present, users clicked an organic result in 8% of sessions, compared to 15% without a summary. Only 1% of participants clicked the links inside the AI box itself.
- Ahrefs (December 2025, 300k queries) measured a 58% drop in first-position CTR, compared to 34.5% in an April 2025 measurement. The effect intensifies as the feature matures.
- Seer Interactive (November 2025) across 25.1M organic impressions: organic CTR dropped from 1.76% to 0.61%, and paid CTR from 19.7% to 6.34%. The same study shows the other side of the coin: brands cited in an AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks than those not cited.
- Sistrix (February 2026) for the German market: AI Overview appears on 20% of queries, and the CTR of the first position drops from 27% to 11%.
The lower end of this range is around 15% (Amsive, 700k queries), while the upper end reaches 60%. We are not aware of any public study with a comparable methodology for the Polish SERP, so applying these figures to your own forecasts also imports someone else's market and query structure.
A fair caveat to our own advice: being cited in an AI Overview is a convenient metric for agencies because it rises precisely when traffic falls. The client is still compensated by revenue, not citation count.
Screen real estate on mobile devices and desktops
The surface area occupied by an AI summary varies by device. The data below comes from a December 2024 study by Botify and DemandSphere and measures the AI Overview combined with the featured snippet when they appear on the same screen.
On a mobile device, the same AI block consumes proportionally more available space than on desktop, which is why CTR drops tend to be steeper in mobile traffic.
Industries and query types most vulnerable to changes
AI Overview hits informational and comparative searches hardest. In the December 2024 study by Botify and DemandSphere, an AI summary accompanied 59% of informational queries and 19% of commercial ones.
- Definitional questions and "how-to" guides receive a full summary most frequently and record the highest share of zero-click sessions.
- On health and finance topics (YMYL), Google usually cites multiple sources simultaneously. Traffic then disperses across domains instead of flowing to the ranking leader.
- Shopping queries ("buy," "price," specific model) trigger an AI Overview less often, as that space is occupied by Google Shopping and ads.
- "Best X for Y" roundups are the most natural material for the model: several reviews go in, one synthesized recommendation comes out.

Step-by-step GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) strategy
The role of authority and E-E-A-T in gaining visibility in AI summaries
Let us start with a premise the GEO industry dislikes, coming directly from Google. In the documentation "AI features and your website," the company states that good SEO practices remain applicable to AI features, that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no special structured data is needed. The baseline requirement is that the page is indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.
In our view, GEO makes sense as a set of priorities, not as an independent discipline with its own budget. Priorities are shifting toward content from which a standalone answer snippet is easy to extract, original data the model cannot find with competitors, and authorship signals. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) operates here through specifics: content signed by a real person with documented industry experience, supported by visible sources of hard data.
Since May 27, 2026, a mechanism that bypasses rankings has been added to the mix. Google expanded Preferred Sources to AI Overviews and AI Mode: the user selects in their settings the publishers they want to see more often, and Google states that this choice influences which sites appear in AI answers when the query is topically relevant and the publisher has fresh content. Since August 20, 2026, an "Add as preferred source" button has been available to embed on websites. Google reports that users have designated over 345,000 unique sources this way. For a publisher with a loyal audience, this is currently the only known way to influence citations outside of content itself.
The role of UGC platforms and discussion forums in Google's AI answer ecosystem
UGC content makes its way into AI Overviews as frequently as corporate websites, sometimes more so. In a June 2025 Semrush study analyzing over 150,000 citations across 5,000 queries, the most frequently cited domain in AI Overviews was Quora, with Reddit taking second place. The reason is structural: on both platforms, someone has already asked the exact question the model is seeking to answer, and multiple users have independently corroborated or contested the claim. For the model, this serves as a consensus signal that cannot be reproduced on a product page. The Q&A format also makes it easier to extract a passage for quotation.
The scale of this phenomenon varies radically across platforms, however, and that is the part guides tend to skip. Data from Tinuiti from January 2026 shows that Perplexity draws 31% of citations from social media, ChatGPT cites Reddit in over 5% of responses, and Gemini in 0.1%. The same report shows that AI Mode cited 143% more unique domains than AI Overviews. Semrush, in turn, noted that in September 2025 Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations dropped from around 60% to 10% in a matter of weeks, following OpenAI's decision to curb overrepresentation of selected sites. Citation patterns change without warning and without explanation.
The practical takeaway is narrower than the popular "be everywhere" mantra suggests. It is worth replying to threads and maintaining a presence where genuine discussion about your category actually happens, because this broadens the pool of signals the model draws from. Trying to game Reddit itself is not worth it: the platform reports flagging 25,000 spam posts and comments per day, and since July 2026 has been using LLM-based tools to do so. We have seen enough wiped accounts to advise against it.

The future of search: Generative UI, ads, and hallucination risks
Generative UI - dynamic interfaces instead of static text
At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, the company announced generative UI in Search: instead of a text block, Search builds a bespoke layout from components for a specific query, including interactive visualizations, tables, charts, and simulations. AI Mode received this first. The mechanism began rolling out to AI Overviews via an August 19, 2026 announcement, with Google promising full availability "in the coming weeks," without specifying which query categories will trigger it. The rollout is ongoing. Alongside this, Google made generated practice quizzes globally available in English within AI Overviews and AI Mode, targeting SAT, GRE, and MCAT prep, among others.
For content, this imposes a concrete formatting requirement. The model needs modular elements that can be extracted and composed into an interface: definitions, parameters, step-by-step lists, and tabular data. A page built with unstructured, lengthy paragraphs can still be indexed while failing to supply the model with a single usable component.
Monetization - ads in AI summaries
Ads in AI Overviews are no longer an experiment. Performance Max, AI Max for Search, Shopping, and broad-match campaigns are eligible to appear in AI Overviews today, with placement determined by classified intent: for high commercial intent, ads sit above the AI summary; for informational queries, below it.
The next phase was announced at Google Marketing Live 2026: ads woven directly into the AI Mode response itself, labeled as sponsored. At the time of announcement, the test covered US advertisers and English-language queries, excluding creatives with pinned assets. Ad format rollouts in Europe typically follow six to twelve months after the US, giving Polish advertisers time to structure their accounts rather than wait idly.
The risk of hallucinations and algorithmic errors
As a generative technology, AI Overview can produce inaccurate information delivered with full conviction. The symbol of this risk remains the advice from the initial weeks after the US debut in May 2024, including the suggestion to eat rocks in response to a nutrition question. Google has since refined the trigger mechanisms and states it displays a summary only when it deems it to add value. The underlying mechanism remains unchanged: a convincingly phrased answer is not a verified answer, and the user has no way to tell the two apart without clicking through to the source.
How to measure traffic and visibility from AI Overview in Google Search Console
Search Console has featured a dedicated report for generative features since June 2026. Google launched it on June 3 for select sites, and on August 11, 2026, it appeared across all profiles without a formal rollout announcement. You can find it in the Performance section on a separate tab alongside search results.
The report displays impressions, meaning the number of times a link to your page appeared within a generative feature. Dimensions: pages, countries, devices, dates. What is missing: clicks, CTR, average position, and queries. There is also no Search Console API access, so you can pull data only through manual CSV exports and chart trends yourself. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover are pooled together without the ability to separate them, and these same impressions are also counted in the standard performance report.
Since clicks are absent from the report, part of the analysis stays traditional. A month-over-month comparison of the Performance report for "what is," "how," and "why" queries remains most telling: steady impressions paired with falling CTR without a change in average position is the clearest footprint of an AI box intercepting clicks. Transactional phrases trigger AI Overview less frequently and serve as a solid control group.
The challenge that remains unresolved is AI Mode. Since May 19, 2026, follow-up questions asked beneath an AI Overview transition into AI Mode with conversational context preserved. Impressions from that dialogue will flow into the generative report, but without queries or clicks, leaving you in the dark about what the user asked or whether they visited your site. Traffic that would previously have generated follow-up long-tail searches will simply vanish in Search Console data as an absence of impression growth.
Google made its direction plain at I/O 2026: Search is AI Search across every layer, not a search engine with AI bolted on. Google reports that AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion users monthly, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion. These are first-party figures lacking independent verification, yet the magnitude of the shift is unmistakable. Classic metrics are reduced to proxy indicators, so supplement your Search Console report with two practices: regular manual checks of key queries for AI Overview presence, and server log analysis for traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, whose referrers differ from standard search engine traffic.
FAQ
Is AI Overview already available in Poland?
Yes, since March 26, 2025, alongside eight other European countries and regions. AI Mode - a conversational search overlay - has also been operational here since October 8, 2025, and since August 11, 2026, all Search Console profiles have included a report displaying impressions within generative features.
How does AI Overview differ from a traditional Featured Snippet?
A Featured Snippet is a static snippet of text excerpted from a single page, with a prominent link to it. An AI Overview synthesizes its own answer drawing from multiple sources at once, with source links given less prominence. According to Pew Research Center, only 1% of users click them.
